Level 3 Childminding and Social care

Employees working in childminding and social care roles are required to implement a duty of care, understand child and young person development and develop positive relationships with children, young people and key stakeholders.

The Level 3 Diploma in Children and Young People’s Workforce (Social Care Pathway) is the ideal qualification for both new and experienced childminders, including a unit for setting up of home-based childcare services (CYPOP 5) required by Ofsted. Furthermore, childminders embarking on the Level 3 will be supported to develop key skills that promote creativity, physical activity and healthy eating in children and young people, coordinate special educational needs and effective case-load management.

This qualification is also very popular amongst those whose role is to provide residential care to children and young people by supporting employees to develop their skills, knowledge and understanding in supporting young people to move towards independence and manage their own lives effectively.

Additional Information

Location: Work-Based and Self-Study

Duration: 9 – 12 Months

Entry Requirements: Individuals can be working towards a role or already be working within the childcare and social care sectors. 

Employee progression: Individuals could progress on to a higher level Management and Leadership frameworks or move towards within a role in training and development.

Course Content

Example Units:

CYPOP 5 – Understand How to Set Up a Home Based Childcare Service

This unit supports childminders and carers to prepare for home-based care. Individuals will also be supported to develop policies and procedures regarding registration and safeguarding, and develop their knowledge of the basic business skills required to set up home-based business.

CYPOP 12  – Support Young People to Move Towards Independence and Manage their Lives

The unit aims to supports an individual to understand the way young people move from dependence to independence and to prepare those in their care both practically and emotionally for sustainable independence. Furthermore, learners will also be trained in strategy to prepare young people to assess personal risks and protect themselves when independent. 


This qualification can be fully funded as a stand-alone qualification through the Advanced Learner Loan. Alternatively, this Level 4 is also available commercially as a stand-alone qualification and funded through a Higher Apprenticeship framework for learners employed. The Apprenticeship route is not available for individuals who are self-employed.
