Yusen – Logistics Case Study
Yusen Logistics provide a global comprehensive logistics service on a business platform built upon the know-how and rich experience gained by their personnel throughout the company’s 60 year history. Supplying contract logistics, warehousing, transportation and distribution services, freight forwarding and supply chain management in one package, Yusen Logistics create robust and cost effective solutions that provide their customer base with sophisticated and quality logistics services.
Looking to their future, Yusen Logistics UK (YLUK) wanted to:
- attract young, raw talent to their organisation
- create a clear progression route for their current transportation and distribution services team
- further innovation and creativity within the Transportation and Distribution Team to continue to meet the needs of their client base
Alongside Train Together, Yusen Logistics visualised the clear progression pathway within transport and distribution services and developed a staged Transport Development Programme (TDP). The programme combines internal departmental training with a funded Apprenticeship route to excellence.
TDP Stage 1
Using the Level 2 Traffic Office Apprenticeship, Train Together mapped the qualification standards to the internal Transportation and Logistics Services Trainee Progression Plan. Each trainee completes 4 x 3 month placements across early, afternoon and night shifts experiencing all aspects of contract delivery, from Planning to Transport Operations.
Each Trainee is mentored throughout the programme by both a Yusen Transport Operations Mentor and the Train Together Trainer.
TDP Stage 2 and 3
Using the Level 2 CMI Team Leading and Level 3 CMI First Line Management Apprenticeship, Train Together developed a bespoke workshop session approach covering topics such as Performance Management, Dealing with Conflict, Project Management, Motivation and Delegation and Presentation Skills.
The programme combines real life everyday experience with management and leadership models, and allows employees to personally and professionally develop their leadership and management skills.

The TDP has been a great opportunity to progress into a career with Yusen Logistics. The skills and knowledge I’ve built up over the last 12 months don’t just help me doing my current job role, but will really help me move forward in the company and as a Transport Logistics Professional.

The Traffic Office Apprenticeship delivered by Train Together as part of the TDP has been a key element. First and foremost, I have gained nationally-recognised qualifications.
