Start your career in the fitness industry by learning the essentials you’ll need to be a successful Gym Instructor. Study the key fundamentals of health and safety, anatomy and physiology, and fitness, health and exercise. After completing the course, you’ll be able to plan and instruct gym-based exercise, and you’ll have an internationally recognised qualification to help you gain employment in gyms.

What you’ll learn

On this gym instructor course, you’ll develop the skills to plan bespoke gym programmes to a wide range of customers. You’ll learn how to deliver health assessment techniques – such as blood pressure and BMI tests. You’ll be able to complete one-to-one consultations and group inductions.

How you’ll learn

The course combines face-to-face workshops, one-to-one coaching and remote teaching sessions – as well as access to your own virtual learning environment, which you can access anywhere, any time. You’ll gain practical experience and be able to transfer this into your practice with confidence and motivation.

The timescales are flexible – typically around 12 weeks, but you can choose your own duration and drop into open workshops that suit your schedule.

  • Consultation and Behavioural Change
  • Professionalism and Customer Care
  • Principles of Anatomy and Physiology for Exercise
  • Planning and Instructing Gym-based Exercise

How you’ll be assessed

You’ll typically submit work every 4 weeks and you’ll have practical observations to complete.

Entry requirements

You’ll need to meet these requirements:

  • A good level of English and Maths Functional Skills or equivalent
  • Resident in the UK/EEA/EU for the last 3 years and aged 16 or over
  • Base knowledge and understanding of the fitness and leisure industry

Career progression

You’ll have completed a Gym Instructor course that’s endorsed by the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMPSA) and recognised by The Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs). You’ll be awarded the Active IQ Level 2 Certificate Gym Instructing.

You can also apply for membership with REPs to add to your professional status – and you could move on to the Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training if you’d like to.
