Level 2 Golf Greenkeeper Apprenticeship

Develop your knowledge and skills as a Golf Greenkeeper who upholds quality provision and the professional standards of the golf course. Learn how to maintain all turf and playing areas while ensuring customer enjoyment, health and safety. During the apprenticeship you’ll be an affiliate member with the British and International Greenkeeper Association (BIGGA) – eligible to apply for full membership when you qualify.

  • Qualification – Level 2 Certificate in Golf Greenkeeping
  • Learning style – delivery sessions, virtual learning, masterclass, remote coaching
  • Progression – qualify as a Golf Green Keeper with BIGGA membership
  • Duration – typically 18 to 24 months

Off-the-job training

As an apprentice you take 20% of your time at work to complete off-the-job training. It’s an innovative way for businesses to gain a multi-skilled workforce – you’ll be able to bring sector insights and the latest knowledge into your organisation.

We’ll support you to train during work hours and confidently evidence your off-the-job learning, supported and facilitated by your employer. You’ll immediately add value by applying your learning to your role – so it’s beneficial for both you and your employer.

What you’ll learn

On this golf and horticulture course, you’ll develop strong competence in using a range of machinery and equipment safely. You’ll learn to play a vital role in the hazard, environmental and ecological operational impact on site. You’ll also help to encourage sustainability across all areas of your role.

How you’ll learn

The programme combines delivery sessions, virtual learning, masterclasses and workplace coach visits.

The modules you’ll study

  • Principles of Mowing and Machine Maintenance and Operations
  • Strategies for Controlling Weeds, Pests, Diseases and Turf
  • Maintenance Practices and Effect on the Environment
  • Importance of Environmental and Ecological Best Practice
  • The Operation of Irrigation and Drainage Systems Maintenance
  • Rolling, Vert-cutting, Scarification and Aeration
  • Fertilisers, Top Dressing and Chemicals Affect Playing Surfaces
  • Personal Performance and Maintaining Working Relationships

How you’ll be assessed

You’ll complete formative assessments throughout the programme, compiling a portfolio of evidence.

At the end of the apprenticeship you’ll complete a summative end-point assessment – designed to check whether you’ve developed the required knowledge, skills and behaviours. This is conducted by an independent body to make sure it’s impartial. For this course, your end-point assessment organisation is LANTRA.

You’ll complete practical and written worksheets, case studies and projects.

Entry requirements

You’ll need to meet these requirements:

  • A good level of English and Maths Functional Skills or equivalent
  • Resident in the UK/EEA/EU for the last 3 years
  • Base knowledge and understanding of the golf and horticulture industries
  • Meet module requirements through your employment in a relevant job role

Career progression

After successfully completing this sport and leisure CPD programme, you’ll be awarded the Level 2 Certificate in Golf Greenkeeping – and you could move on to the Level 3 Advanced Golf Green Keeper apprenticeship. You can also apply for membership with BIGGA during your studies – and become a full member when you qualify.
