Level 2 Leisure Team Member Apprenticeship

Course summary

Develop your skills as a health club or leisure centre team member – offering a quality activities and experiences to support your community. Gain a range of Level 2 qualifications while broadening your leisure and sport skills and helping people to improve their health and wellbeing.

  • Qualifications – Level 2 Gym Instructing, First Aid and Swimming Instruction

Off-the-job training

As an apprentice you take 20% of your time at work to complete off-the-job training. It’s an innovative way for businesses to gain a multi-skilled workforce – you’ll be able to bring sector insights and the latest knowledge into your organisation.

We’ll support you to train during work hours and confidently evidence your off-the-job learning, supported and facilitated by your employer. You’ll immediately add value by applying your learning to your role – so it’s beneficial for both you and your employer.

What you’ll learn

On this sport and leisure course, you’ll cover communication processes, legal and safety requirements, and how to monitor customers and use IT in the workplace. You’ll learn swim teaching and supervision – as well as leisure operations, gym inductions, screening, health checks and techniques to manage groups.

How you’ll learn

The programme combines delivery sessions, virtual learning, masterclasses and workplace coach visits.

How you’ll be assessed

You’ll complete formative assessments throughout the programme, compiling a portfolio of evidence.

At the end of the apprenticeship you’ll complete a summative end-point assessment – designed to check whether you’ve developed the required knowledge, skills and behaviours. This is conducted by an independent body to make sure it’s impartial. For this course, your end-point assessment organisation is ActiveIQ.

This will include a professional discussion with an independent end-point assessor and an observation of practical activities, with a Q&A session.

Entry requirements

You’ll need to meet these requirements:

  • A good level of English and Maths Functional Skills or equivalent
  • Resident in the UK/EEA/EU for the last 3 years
  • Base knowledge and understanding of the fitness and leisure industry
  • Meet module requirements through your employment in a relevant job role
     

Career progression

You’ll have completed a course that’s endorsed by the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMPSA) and recognised by The Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs). You’ll achieve the Level 2 Certificate Gym Instructing and Level 2 Award in First Aid from Active IQ – as well as a recognised Level 2 Certificate in Swimming Instruction.

You can also apply for membership with CIMPSA and REPs to add to your professional status – and you could move on to the Level 3 apprenticeship in Personal Training or the Level 3 Leisure Duty Manager apprenticeship if you’d like to.
