Level 3 Advanced Golf Greenkeeper Apprenticeship

Develop towards an advanced level of golf greenkeeping. You’ll gain skills in supporting the supervision of the greenkeeping team and maintenance of the golf course – ensuring high levels of professionalism. During the apprenticeship you’ll be an affiliate member with the British and International Greenkeeper Association (BIGGA) – eligible to apply for full membership when you qualify.

  • Qualifications – Level 3 Advanced Golf Greenkeeping, Level 2 Safe Use of Pesticides
  • Learning style ­– delivery sessions, virtual learning, masterclass, remote coaching
  • Progression – advance your career in greenkeeping and golf course management
  • Duration – typically 21 to 24 months

Off-the-job training

As an apprentice you take 20% of your time at work to complete off-the-job training. It’s an innovative way for businesses to gain a multi-skilled workforce – you’ll be able to bring sector insights and the latest knowledge into your organisation.

We’ll support you to train during work hours and confidently evidence your off-the-job learning, supported and facilitated by your employer. You’ll immediately add value by applying your learning to your role – so it’s beneficial for both you and your employer.

What you’ll learn

On this golf and horticulture course, you’ll enhance your supervisory, technical and agronomic skills. You’ll study a wide range of attributes to an advanced level – from preparation of the course and playing surfaces to leadership, communication, finance, and health and safety.

How you’ll learn

The programme combines delivery sessions, virtual learning, masterclasses and workplace coach visits.

  • Lead and Supervise the Greenkeeping Team

How you’ll be assessed

You’ll complete formative assessments throughout the programme, compiling a portfolio of evidence.

At the end of the apprenticeship you’ll complete a summative end-point assessment – designed to check whether you’ve developed the required knowledge, skills and behaviours. This is conducted by an independent body to make sure it’s impartial. For this course, your end-point assessment organisation is LANTRA.

You’ll complete practical and written worksheets, case studies and projects.

Entry requirements

You’ll need to meet these requirements:

  • A good level of English and Maths Functional Skills or equivalent
  • Resident in the UK/EEA/EU for the last 3 years
  • Base knowledge and understanding of the golf and horticulture industries 

Career progression

After successfully completing this sport and leisure CPD programme, you’ll be awarded the Level 3 Advanced Golf Greenkeeping, Level 2 Safe Use of Pesticides (PA1), Boom Sprayer (PA2) or Handheld (PA3). You could then move on to the Level 3 Learning Mentor or Level 4 Assessor Coach apprenticeship.

You can also apply for membership with BIGGA during your studies – and become a full member when you qualify.
