Level 3 Personal Trainer Apprenticeship

On this apprenticeship course you’ll develop your coaching skills to become a Personal Trainer (PT). You’ll be able to design and provide creative and personalised exercise programmes – motivating your clients to make positive changes and taking them on a journey towards their fitness, wellbeing and sporting objectives.

  • Qualification – Level 3 Diploma in Gym Instructing and Personal Training
  • Learning style – delivery sessions, virtual learning, masterclass, remote coaching
  • Progression – become a qualified and skilled Personal Trainer
  • Duration – typically 15 to 18 months

Off-the-job training

As an apprentice you take 20% of your time at work to complete off-the-job training. It’s an innovative way for businesses to gain a multi-skilled workforce – you’ll be able to bring sector insights and the latest knowledge into your organisation.

We’ll support you to train during work hours and confidently evidence your off-the-job learning, supported and facilitated by your employer. You’ll immediately add value by applying your learning to your role – so it’s beneficial for both you and your employer.

What you’ll learn

On this personal training course, you’ll learn how to improve the personal health and wellbeing of the people you coach by delivering engaging sessions and programmes. You’ll be able to plan and deliver health and fitness targets, resolve problems and build fantastic relationships with clients. You’ll also be able to demonstrate advanced knowledge in anatomy, physiology and nutrition – as well as leadership and ethical business acumen.

How you’ll be assessed

You’ll complete formative assessments throughout the programme, compiling a portfolio of evidence.

At the end of the apprenticeship you’ll complete a summative end-point assessment – designed to check whether you’ve developed the required knowledge, skills and behaviours. This is conducted by an independent body to make sure it’s impartial. For this course, your end-point assessment organisation is ActiveIQ.

You’ll be observed delivering a practical session and you’ll present the portfolio of work you’ve built up over the course. The presentation includes a Q&A – and you’ll also complete an interview.

Entry requirements

You’ll need to meet these requirements:

  • A good level of English and Maths Functional Skills or equivalent
  • Resident in the UK/EEA/EU for the last 3 years
  • Base knowledge and understanding of the fitness and leisure industry
  • Meet module requirements through your employment in a relevant job role

Career progression

You’ll be awarded the Level 3 Diploma in Gym Instructing and Personal Training from Active IQ. You’ll have successful completed a course that’s endorsed by the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMPSA) and recognised by The Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs). You’ll also have affiliate membership with CIMPSA and REPs during the course – and associate membership when you finish.

With this qualification you’ll be able to develop your career as a PT – and potentially move onto the Level 5 Departmental Manager apprenticeship.
