Level 4 Sports Coach Apprenticeship

Complete a sports coaching apprenticeship to gain skills in providing high quality learning, development, health and performance experiences. You’ll specialise as either a High-Performance Sports Coach, a Community Sports Coach or a Schools Sports Coach – qualifying with valuable qualifications to help you develop your career.

  • Qualification – Level 3 or 4 qualifications, depending on the pathway you choose
  • Learning style – delivery sessions, virtual learning, masterclass, remote coaching
  • Progression – qualify as a high-performance, community or schools Sports Coach
  • Duration – typically 18 months

Off-the-job training

As an apprentice you take 20% of your time at work to complete off-the-job training. It’s an innovative way for businesses to gain a multi-skilled workforce – you’ll be able to bring sector insights and the latest knowledge into your organisation.

We’ll support you to train during work hours and confidently evidence your off-the-job learning, supported and facilitated by your employer. You’ll immediately add value by applying your learning to your role – so it’s beneficial for both you and your employer.

What you’ll learn

On this sports coaching course, you’ll gain extensive technical and tactical sports knowledge and skills to design and deliver coaching programmes that engage, motivate and evolve clients. You’ll be able to support achievement in talent, amateur and professional competition – as well as increasing participation, social inclusion, educational standards and wellbeing.

How you’ll learn

Blended learning styles

The programme combines delivery sessions, virtual learning, masterclasses and workplace coach visits. You’ll choose from one of three pathways – High Performance Sports Coach, Community Sports Coach or Schools Sports Coach.

  • Behaviours and Leadership Attributes

How you’ll be assessed

You’ll complete formative assessments throughout the programme, compiling a portfolio of evidence.

At the end of the apprenticeship you’ll complete a summative end-point assessment – designed to check whether you’ve developed the required knowledge, skills and behaviours. This is conducted by an independent body to make sure it’s impartial. For this course, your end-point assessment organisation is ActiveIQ.

Entry requirements

You’ll need to meet these requirements:

  • A good level of English and Maths
  • Resident in the UK/EEA/EU for the last 3 years
  • Meet module requirements through your employment in a relevant job role

Career progression

Depending on the pathway you choose, after successfully completing this sports coaching programme you’ll gain a Level 3 Sports Coach Diploma or a Level 3 Certificate in Supporting the Delivery of Physical Education and School Sport. You’ll have the option of a Level 4 Diploma in Primary Physical Education Practice as well.

You’ll also gain professional membership of The Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMPSA).
