Jealous is the acting Manager at Inspirations residential home for children and young people in Leicestershire and has recently completed a level 5 Leadership and Management course. Although a regulatory requirement, Jealous was also very keen to develop himself and finished the course in around 14 months.
“There is a whole range of things that I’ve learnt and developed my skills in whilst doing this course including strategic management and formulating policies, but a more in-depth knowledge about managing staff performance and development has definitely been the most beneficial thing. Quite early on I had to restructure the team, so learning more about managing change, recruitment and selection processes and evaluating performance really helped to work through it and we now have a much stronger team.
“All the teams’ jobs can be very stressful and understanding how best to motivate and support them to achieve job satisfaction has made a real difference. I didn’t understand the vital part training could play before, or the impact having SMART objectives could have on people’s performance, but they all fit together. The outcome has been brilliant and we’ve recently scored ‘Outstanding’ in every area in a recent Ofsted inspection!”
Jealous also found the approach taken by the team at Train Together helped on a professional level as well as a learner. “The tutors were so supportive and I really enjoyed sharing ideas, discussing case studies and the general managerial discussions and issues we talked through. I learnt how to flex my leadership style according to the situation and the training definitely kept me on track; I was very proud putting things into practice.”
